Bogus warning from assert

The inclusion of warnings in the deprecated functions now means that the 
first time assert is used it prints a warning. The reason is that the 
code currently supports the use of lists for the cond and expected 
arguments.. I'd suggest just removing this functionality as in the 
attached patch.
