octave-3.0.3 crashes while executing 'expfit' ("free(): invalid pointer")

I have tried to run expfit_crash in Windows (Vista 32 bit, Octave
3.0.3 MSVC version from Octave Forge) and in virtual machine with
Linux guest (Virtualbox with Kubuntu 8.10 32 bit, Octave 3.0.1 from
repositories). In both cases, after few minutes of computations, I got
"ordinary" error message (not the "invalid pointer" crash):

error: memory exhausted or requested size too large for range of
Octave's index type -- trying to return to prompt
