Possible bug with contourf and tics

It works for you?  I have gnuplot 4.2.2 and I don't see the ticks with

  contourf (peaks);

with either 3.0.0 or the current sources.  I do see the labels, but
not tick marks.  What other commands are needed to make them appear?
