imshow does not display simple color images properly

Bug report for Octave 3.0.1 configured for powerpc-apple-darwin7.9.1
Description:

a 100x100x3 matrix of values of 128 should produce
a grey image with imshow. The current output is white.
Other 100x100x3 matrices with color scales are messed
up completely.
Octave 3.0.0 seems to behave better, a 100x100x3 values of
128 imshows a black image, but at least if
I have a maximum and minimum value in the matrix the
colors rescale so that they then display correctly, but
even this does not follow the documentation. For instance,
a 100x100x3 matrix with 128 everywhere execept (1,1,:) = 0
and (1,2,:) = 255 displays a grey image with two different
pixels.
Octave 3.0.1 does not display any images as I would expect.
