Octave UI Locks Up

I run Octave on multiple desktops.  Recently I installed Octave on my IBM T60 Laptop.  The laptop is running:
- Microsoft Windows XP Professional Version 2002 Service Pack 3
- Intel(R) Core(TM) Duo CPU T2400 @1.83Ghz
- 987 Mhz, 2.00 GB of RAM
- .NET Framework 1.1 (1.1 Hotfix), 2.0 SP1, 3.0 SP1, 3.5 are all installed
- Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable installed
- Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable (9.0.21022) installed

I am able to run the Octave Console app (octave-3.0.1.exe); However, when I run the Windows GUI app (octavede.exe) and attempt to type anything at the script prompt, the application hangs.  Are there are dependencies that I might not have installed on my laptop that are installed on my desktop.
