Fresh install on an HP nc6400 with T5500 1.66 Ghz Centrino Duo Core, 2Gb ram.
CPU selection: Intel Pentium 4 with SSE2
I selected the Graphical User Interface under Misc.
I selected JHandles
There were no errors reported during the install.
I read the readme and then launched Octave and the below resulted:

After remembering that the GUI was experimental, I decided to remove Octave and then try to re-install it with the same options except without the GUI.

Same result...

(I attached the 'octave-core' file that was created when I ran Octave after the 2nd install of Octave.)

I did not reboot the laptop between the first uninstall and the 2nd install.

I did have a 2nd monitor on at the time (extended the laptop's monitor with a 2nd monitor) - so I disabled that and tried running Octave again, same result.

I read the bug logs and found that I have version 1.3.1_11 of Java.  I am not able to update Java on my laptop at this time, so I uninstalled and installed Octave with GNUPlot instead of JHandles.

That fixed the problem (allowed Octave to run) - so the version of Java was the issue.

Perhaps a check could be added if the user selects the JHandles option to make sure that an older version of Java is not installed?

Thanks
Tom
