This was not my experience.  I can now copy and paste the code for Fig. 
15.3 as
shown in the Manual into Octave
and get the correct plot.  That is how I found the error due to use of 
png.  I think that
readers of the Manual should be able to reproduce claims made in the 
Manual that
take the form "this code produces this result." ALL cases where this is 
not true are
serious errors.
