octave 3.1.55 different from 3.0

This looks like a problem with indexing.  Here is a simpler example:

  c = cell (2, 1);
  s.a(1:2) = [1, 1]
  c{1} = s
  s.a(1:2) = [2, 2]
  c{2} = s
