extra chars in redirected outout

Whenever I am redirecting the output from octave ( ver 3.03 par example )
like

octave foo.oc > bar.txt

I am getting some extra characters at the beginning of bar.txt: 

0000000 033   [   ?   1   0   3   4   .....

( obtained with od -c bar.txt ) --- seems to be ANSI color codes or another
garbage  and it really
annoying ! Any simple way to get rid of ?
