problem with figure size

Please treat this report as obsolete.  The main problem appears to have
been fixed as a part of the subplot changes which were recently committed.
And, Ben is still working on remaining items.

I will rerun my recent plots using the current system, and report any 
remaining
problems (and try to be more precise, of course).
