problem printing figures

Running 3.0.1 in QTOctave 0.7.4 in Ubuntu 9.04

when I create a figure with no title or axis labeling, it seems to save 
as .eps or .pdf without problems, and can be then printed to a printer.  
However when I add a  title or axis labels, then save the figure, it 
can't be viewed and gives an error when trying to print.  Is this a 
known bug and is there any way to get around it?
