Diasappearing Plots

I just installed 3.0.1 Octave both at work and at home on similar Dell
systems running Windows XP.  At work, when I open Octave, it simply says
"panic -segmentation fault" and crashes. At home, it runs a simple program
but when I try to plot, the plot window appears then vanishes before the
graph gets plotted.  What am I missing here?
