New to Octave. Need help on plotting

I'm new to Octave.  Please bear with me if this happens to be another
FAQ.

I'd like to know if Octave is capable of making bitmap plots (i.e. use
of MATLAB's imagesc() in something like
http://veimages.gsfc.nasa.gov/1599/mopitt_co_samerica.gif) with some
degree of user interaction.  I know it is possible to generate such
plots in Preview (I'm using Mac OS X), but once they are generated,
there is no way to, say, read the value of a given pixel off the image.
 Anyone has the same problem?
