By "Octave site" do you refer to http://octave.sourceforge.net/ ?

If so you should have the app built by Thomas Treichl which also
include gnuplot. In the octave.app.dmg is an "Extras" folder. In that
folder you will find "gnuplot-4.2.3-i386.dmg" (assuming you have an
Intel based Mac).

Please refer to "Do I have to install Gnuplot.app from the Extras
directory?" in the "Readme.html" file which you'll find in
octave.app.dmg.

Thomas has included a lot of good info in that Readme file. I
encourage you to browse through it.
