Can't Find Qtoctave Menus

I've compiled and I'm running octave-3.0.2 from qtoctave-0.6.8
I compiled the qt-octave-bin-amd64 download to get qtoctave-0.6.8
Everything seems to work except for the non-appearance of the "menus" 
icon on the "taskbar". The menu and image directories are correctly 
located. The supplied video illustrates where the icons should appear.
I've read the documentation and as far as I can see I've not missed any 
instructions on activating the menu system.
  Can anyone offer advice on getting the menus to appear?

As a separate issue I've tried compiling qtoctave-3.1 but I've failed to 
  get cmake to find qmake. Cmake finds c++ which is in the same dir as 
qmake i.e. in /usr/bin.
