I must be going nuts! The separate issue should read as follows:
"As a separate issue I've tried compiling qtoctave-0.8.1 but I've failed
to get cmake to find qmake. Cmake finds c++ which is in the same dir as
qmake i.e. in /usr/bin."

I suspect that cmake is looking for qmake in a QT directory and not in
/usr/bin.

What a mess! Time for a coffee!
Apologies.
