colorbar, again

I'm running 3.0.1 as well but do not see the problem you mention.

In the event it is a gnuplot *feature*, what version are you running? Mine is 

$ gnuplot --version
gnuplot 4.2 patchlevel 3

I've attached a plot of what I get (just to be sure there is no confusion).

Beyond checking the version of gnuplot, I have no idea what might be the problem (anyone else?).
