Symbolic Math with Octave

Following some instructions from a MATLAB book  I find that commands like 
>findsym(S)  or  >subs(S, 'x', 'y') cause Octave 3.0.3 to quickly exit and 
terminate.  Suggestions welcome.  Thanks.
