Henry answered most of your question.

Regarding TextEdit, be sure to save the file as a txt file ... Unicode  
(UTF-8) is a safe bet. Also be careful that the "Hide Extension" box  
is not checked and that you save it with a ".m" suffix and not a  
".txt" suffix.
