You're right about this, of course. You do have to worry about display gamma
and image transfer functions, etc. But if you're comfortable with that it
doesn't have to be too hard. It depends on the data. Sometimes inverting the
data/colormap works well. Sometimes a log transform helps. Or squaring. Or
square root...
