Octave and PHP

Hi,

I'm developing a PHP application that needs to communicates with Octave libraries.

Does anyone knows how can I call Octave functions/libraries from PHP without having to execute the program itself from PHP (like with passthru command)? My greatest interest is on the quadratic programming functions from Octave.
