[changeset] string functions: fix docstrings, add examples, references and tests

Hi,

attached is a changeset for documentation strings and tests of the string functions. In addition, it
fixes one missing semicolon and two nargin checks.

Note that Francescos strrep patch (he sent today) will not cleanly apply on top of this changeset
(looking at it, I do not really understand why).
