Compilation problem in libcruft/misc: smachar.c does not exist

I noticed a compilation problem in libcruft/misc, due to smachar.c.
The dep file smachar.d wants to be created from smachar.c, but
the latter does not exist (I guess it should be created from machar.c,
with different compilation flags). I don't have time to fix it myself,
so I hope someone will have a look at it.
