Building hg source on Ubuntu 8.04

I have tried various things and cannot get the source from the mercurial
respository to build. I get this error
"../libcruft/libcruft.so: undefined reference to 'icmax1_'

Any ideas?  

Steps I performed
1) ./autogen.sh
2) ./configure
3) make -j4
